El radio (Ra) es un metal radiactivo natural que existe como uno de varios is\u00f3topos. Se forma cuando el uranio (U) y el torio (Th) se desintegran en el medio ambiente. En la naturaleza, el radio se encuentra en bajas concentraciones en el suelo, el agua, las rocas, el carb\u00f3n, las plantas y los alimentos. Con el tiempo, el radio se desintegra y libera radio-226, radio-228 y radio-224. Si bien la vida media del radio-226 es muy larga, de 1600 a\u00f1os, la del radio-228 es de tan solo 6,7 a\u00f1os y la del radio-224 es a\u00fan m\u00e1s corta, de 3,5 d\u00edas.<\/p>

A medida que los diferentes is\u00f3topos se descomponen, pueden ingresar al cuerpo a trav\u00e9s de la ingesta de alimentos, agua potable o absorci\u00f3n cut\u00e1nea. Con el tiempo, la exposici\u00f3n a estos is\u00f3topos puede provocar muchas enfermedades potenciales y causar da\u00f1os internos al cuerpo. 1,2,3<\/sup>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

El an\u00e1lisis de radio-226 y radio-228 implica la medici\u00f3n de la tasa de desintegraci\u00f3n de los is\u00f3topos correspondientes a lo largo del tiempo. Una vez preparadas las muestras, el is\u00f3topo de radio-224, derivado del radio-228, tarda en desintegrarse. Podemos medir primero el radio-228 y luego el radio-226 una vez que el radio-224 se haya desintegrado casi por completo. Si una muestra presenta una alta concentraci\u00f3n de radio-228, el tiempo de desintegraci\u00f3n ser\u00e1 mayor. Debido a las tecnolog\u00edas e instrumentaci\u00f3n actuales, no existe una forma m\u00e1s r\u00e1pida de realizar estos an\u00e1lisis cumpliendo con los l\u00edmites de detecci\u00f3n exigidos por la EPA.<\/p>
