Mastic Sampling Guide

When sampling mastic, especially when that mastic is headed for gravimetric reduction prior to analysis, it is very important to collect sufficient sample. Please use the following as a guide when collecting samples.

Note: Gravimetric reduction is a prerequisite to perform a point count analysis on the majority of mastic samples.

It is easy to overestimate how much mastic sample you have when looking at the black stripes on the back of a floor tile. It is the thickness of the mastic layer that is key, not the size of the tile the mastic is attached to.

This tile for example, will be difficult to collect enough mastic from without cross contamination from the tile. While it is acceptable to submit separate tile and mastic samples to the laboratory, it is generally more practical to perform the layering in the laboratory setting.
