Bird and Bat Dropping Pathogens

About Bird and Bat Droppings

Bird and bat droppings are reservoirs for opportunistic pathogens that can cause important human diseases: histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis and psittacosis. Histoplasmosis is caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Histoplasma lives in the environment, particularly in soil that contains large quantities of bird or bat droppings. Humans can develop histoplasmosis by breathing in microscopic fungal spores.

Cryptococcosis is an infection caused by fungi that belong to the genus Cryptococcus. While there are over 30 different species of Cryptococcus, one species of primary concern is Cryptococcus neoformans. Cryptococcus neoformans is found in soil throughout the world, usually in association with the presence of bird droppings, especially pigeon droppings. It is commonly found within debris from pigeon roosts and soil contaminated with decaying pigeon or chicken droppings. Infection usually occurs through inhalation of spores from the environment.

Another pathogen found in bird droppings is the bacteria Chlamydia psittaci. Chlamydia psittaci can cause psittacosis in humans due to the transmission of the bacteria from infected birds. Infected birds shed the bacteria in their droppings and respiratory secretions. As these droppings and secretions dry, dust particles containing the infectious Chlamydia psittaci bacteria can become aerosolized. The most common way someone becomes infected is by breathing in the dust from these dried secretions.

EMSL Test Codes

  • Histoplasma capsulatum by NIOSH Nested PCR – M208
  • Cryptococcus neoformans by qPCR – M143
  • Chlamydia psittaci by qPCR – M234

Sample Types

  • Surface swab samples and air samples.
  • All three tests can be performed on a single sample.
  • We do not analyze soil samples due to federal safety regulations.

EMSL’s Swab Sampling Procedure

  1. Obtain a sterile 1 mL Butterfield’s Solution swab (EMSL Product ID 8708935) from EMSL.
  2. With gloves on, remove the swab from its sterile packaging.
  3. Carefully unscrew the cap of the sampling device as the swab is attached to the lid of the cap.
  4. Gently press excess solution from the swab by pressing it against the inside wall of the vial with a rolling motion.
  5. Hold swab at 30° angle from the sampling surface taking care not to contaminate the swab or the sampling site.
  6. Using firm, even pressure move the swab slowly and thoroughly over an entire 4” x 4” sampling area, rewetting the swab tip with the neutralizing solution as needed. First horizontally, then vertically.
  7. Once sampling is complete, carefully place the swab back into the vial and close the cap tightly.
  8. Label the sample using a permanent ink marker.
  9. Record the sampled area on the chain of custody and ship the swab to EMSL Cinnaminson, NJ laboratory, attention Sample Receiving. Sample refrigeration is not required.

EMSL’s Air Sampling Procedure

  1. Obtain a 3-piece PCR air sampling cassette (EMSL Product ID 8715309) from EMSL.
  2. Remove the upper (blue) and lower (red) plugs from the cassette.
  3. Attach a vacuum pump to the cassette through the lower opening (red plug now removed).
  4. Collect 1,000 L of air at a pump flow rate between 10 and 25 Liter/min.
  5. Close the cassette with the upper (blue) and lower (red) plugs of the cassette.
  6. Record the sample ID on the side of cassette and place into a sealed zip-lock style bag.
  7. Record the volume of air sampled on the chain of custody and ship the cassette to EMSL Cinnaminson, NJ laboratory, attention Sample Receiving. Sample refrigeration is not required.
