PPI Sampling with Buck Libra Pumps

Different kinds of PPIs and Bulk Libra pumps available:

  • 8 LPM PPI (Red): Enhances sensitivity (for short-term and/or low concentration sampling) using high flow pumps LP-12 or LP-20
  • 4 LLPM (Orange) PPI: Enhances sensitivity; TWA sampling for ≥ 4 hours using LP-5 pumps
  • 2 LPM (Ivory) PPI: 8-hour TWA sampling using LP-4 pumps

Calibration of the Pump

Equipment needed:

PPI

Buck Libra Pump

1/4” Tygon Tubing

Rotameter

Calibration Adapter

  1. Ensure the pump has run for 5 minutes before calibrating.
  2. Align the bottom of the calibration adapter with the inlet plate of PPI and press down firmly until the calibration adapter’s O-ring is engaged and creates an even seal.
  3. Use flexible tubing to connect the exhaust of the Disposable PPI to the inlet of a sample pump.
  4. Use flexible tubing to connect the inlet of the calibration adapter to the suction port (outlet) of a calibrator. (1st picture: Front view. 2nd picture: top view)
  5. Calibrate to 2 L/min for the 2 L/min PPIs, 4 L/min for the 4 L/min, or 8 L/min for the 8 L/min PPIs. Use the top and bottom arrows to increase or decrease the flow rate of the pump.
  6. When calibration is completed, disconnect the tubing from the calibrator and calibration adapter.
  7. Firmly pull/twist to remove the calibration adapter from the Disposable PPI inlet plate.

Sampling Set-Up

  1. Write sample ID on sampling label provided. Adhere sampling label to bottom of base plate.
  2. Remove protective end cap from exhaust.
  3. Use flexible tubing to connect the exhaust of the Disposable PPI to the inlet of a sample pump.
  4. Clip Disposable PPI onto a worker’s collar or lapel in the breathing zone or in the area to be sampled.
  5. Clip sample pump at the worker’s waist or close to the Disposable PPI.
  6. Turn on pump and record pertinent sample data (ex: sampling start time).
  7. After the desired sample time has elapsed, turn off the pump and unclip sampler from sampling location.
  8. Apply Post-use label to inlet plate to seal the sampler.
  9. Record sample stop time on label on the bottom of sampler.
  10. Disconnect sampler from pump and reinstall protective end cap on the exhaust.
  11. Package and transport samples and blanks and unused media in respective bags provided, to the laboratory for analysis.
