Pre-Sampling Instruction

  1. Save the original shipping box from EMSL to return the samples to the laboratory for analysis.
  2. On both samples, use a gentle stream of water to prevent overflow or splashing.
  3. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling the bottles.
  4. To avoid contaminating your samples: please do not touch the inside of the bottle cap(s), or the inside of the bottle(s).
  5. IMPORTANT: Collect your samples in the morning Monday through Thursday. Ship everything back to the laboratory the same afternoon as collection. Please do not conduct sampling on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday

Selecting Your Collection Location

  1. Use a clean, properly functioning faucet in an area free of excessive dust or other sources of contamination. Non-swivel faucets are preferred.
  2. Select a faucet without devices such as screens, aerators, hoses, or purification devices which may affect results. If present, please remove them and thoroughly wipe the spout with a 10% bleach solution.
  3. IMPORTANT: The faucet should be high enough to allow the bottle to fit underneath, without contacting the mouth of the bottle with the faucet (example: a bath tub or kitchen sink).
  4. Before collecting your samples, please put on your gloves and eye protection.

Collection Instructions

  1. Let the water run from the cold tap for at least two minutes before collecting your samples.
  2. Remove the cap from the first bottle and please hold the cap by its outside edges only.
  3. From the cold water tap, slowly fill the bottle to the neck so there is no air left in the bottle.
  4. Turn the bottle upside down and gently tap the side of the glass three times to make sure there are no bubbles in the bottle. If there are any bubbles, please add a little more water and repeat.
  5. Secure the cap to the bottle for shipment.
